N ONE EXODUS INCIDENT to North Acheh, Nindja Director Natsuko Saeki said that ethnic Gayos and Achenese from Amor, Wirsap and Simpur villages of the Syiah Utama Sub-District, took five days trekking through the jungle to reach Matangkuli in North Acheh.

"Most of these villagers are coffee planters", she said. "It started with lacking daily necessities as traders are afraid to go to South Acheh after several trucks have been burnt by unknown gangs. Four villagers from Amor went to a nearby Javanese village of Pondok Baru to sell their coffee and purchase foodstuff. They never returned. A few days later a Javanese from Pondok Baru came to tell their families to go see the four men at Pepedang. This is a spot known as a place where where corpses of murdered Gayos and Achenese are dumped.

Many corpses, including those of children have been found there.

The families became frightened and decided to flee. But before going, they held a meeting with adjacent villagers of Wirsap and Simpur. Finally all from these 3 villages decided to leave on 24.06.2001 at 6.00 pm.

It took them 5 days trekking through the deep jungle to reach Paya Bakong village in Matangkuli, North Acheh. In the group there were 2 women who had just given birth a few days earlier and one who gave birth just a day after arriving at Paya Bakong. The ages of children range between 7 to 9, while the adults in their thirties. Altogether there were 233 persons from 108 families and are now sheltered in a Mosque that is not to far away from military posts, a fact that traumatises them even further", said Ms.
Saeki.

Another reason for fleeing, accordiang to these villagers, is that ethnic Javanese from the Pondok Baru, Blang Pulo, Pulau Sari, Blang Jorong and Sidodadi villages have been given facilities by the military in order to search for Achenese and Gayos suspected of having joined GAM.

The condition of the refugees, accordiang to Natsuko, is very bad.  "They are in dire need of medical care and clothing, food supply and other daily necessities as they have left their villages with only the clothes on their backs", Natsuko Saeki concluded.
