Fragile archipelago

Tiger Sumatra at risk — Rain forest in Acheh and Sumatra has been a difficult issue. Environment destruction has caused landslides and foods through out Sumatra and elsewhere. The Indonesian Red Cross reported at least 100 people were killed and some 132 people listed as missing in landslides and deluges that hit Nias Island off the northwestern coast of Sumatra in August 2001. Such environmental disasters are becoming more common as forests are cut for commercial profit. In a broader scope, nearly 3/4 of the archipelago forests has already been destroyed. In Indonesia, an area of forest the size of Belgium is disappearing every year.
