I was able to report on the soldiers fighting against the TNI for the Free Acheh Movement (GAM) in the eastern district. The TNI is operating a military maneuver in this province, where more than 40 people were killed last September. Although this village is technically under GAM control, a TNI military base exists about five kilometers away. Gunshots are occasionally heard as if it were a warning.
Soldiers camping in the vicinity gathered with their armaments. I took photos of them gathered together and of a military training in the jungle. However, I decided to wait until the soldiers began taking a rest, since I wanted to get a more natural demeanor. In the midst of the heat, a soldier came to a cafeteria to buy a drink. He had the national flag of Acheh wrapped like a cape from his shoulder and drunk up a bottle of coca-cola in the dimness. |
