DECEMBER 4, 1976, THROUGH a 'Declaration of Independence' Dr. Tgk Hasan M. di Tiro
founded The
Free Acheh (GAM), and he is
the formal president of Acheh/Sumatra National
Liberation Front (ASNLF).
GAM emerged in
Achenese community due to a
systematic suffering from a reality that unworthy
to live in. Human rights violations for more than ten years
under the power of Indonesia dictators; during the
course of which thousands of lives have been lost.
Wing-female GAM military, known Pasukan
Inong Balee, has been the front line of this movement.
GAM, which
claims to have a 100,000-strong guerrilla army,
has been seeking restoration of the
independence of Acheh from the tottering and eternally
corrupt governments of Indonesia.
Now
GAM has gained more sympathizers, more Achenese find
themselves are getting courageous to make a change in
their lives by looking their realities differently and fight for freedom and
self-worth.
