triking is a right of every human being on this earth that is guaranteed by the laws of all civilized nations.
The threat and cruelty by the armed forces of the
RI against the people of Acheh have not been limited
only to this year, they have been practiced daily for
the last 56 years. The strike that the people of Acheh
is going to implement represents a peaceful/non-violent protest within the framework of
attempts to reduce the Indonesian oppression on the
Achenese people.
We take this opportunity to call on the Indonesian
government to understand and recognized the rights of the people of Acheh in order that in future the rather uncivilized rethorics and threats could be reduced.
We also call on the Indonesian government officials to be willing to learn and understand a little bit better the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Humanitarian Law in order to avoid committing mistakes and making fools of themselves.

AGAM, as the military force of the Free Acheh
Movement (GAM) will face with all its might any threat from the Indonesian military and will protect the people of Acheh. Consequently, it is not necessary for the brave people of Acheh to worry. Do stay in-door or in places of worship to perform prayers during the TOTAL STRIKE from 16 to 18 January 2002.
Hospitals, clinics and PMI (the Red Cross) should
contiune to monitor the situation thoroughly and we
call on them to provide immediate assistance to the
public whenever needed. We also urge strongly that
while performing their duties in the field they wear
identification and protection markings on their
persons as well as on their vehicles. AGAM personnel will help whenever possible. ASNLF/GAM thank them for their service for humanity.
Teungku Sofyan Dawod is an ASNLF military spokesman/Tiro Central Command.
