s a company that is benefiting tremendously from Achenese soil, EMOI should not participate in the abuse of the people of Acheh and should not consider them as something of lesser value than that of their natural gas that it exploits. Undeniable facts tell us that EMOI’s facilities have been turned into military posts as well as torture camps and killing chambers by the Indonesian military.
It has been well-documented also that the Indonesian military, to which EMOI has been paying for a very long period of time, 3 million Rupiahs a month for each soldier of the TNI based on its premises for the purpose of protecting its security, apart from other amounts given to their commanders. These soldiers, under the pretext of providing security for EMOI that has in fact never been threatened, except for some minor incidents, have violated almost all articles of the Law of War.
Summary killings, harassment of innocent civilians, deliberate torching of civilian facilities, rapes of women and children, disappearing of detainees, abductions, and disproportional use of force, are just a few of the uncivilised acts perpetrated by members of the Indonesian Army paid by EMOI.
It is deplorable that EMOI is making use of the might of American influence as the world’s only superpower to shield itself from being held accountable for the human rights abuses carried out by those under its employment. It is also very saddening to realize that this world’s largest enterprise seems to care about human rights only at home in the US and plays the ostrich’s trick elsewhere in the world.
We note with utter dismay that EMOI has been partly responsible also in the current bloody military operation in Acheh by its request for reinforcement of the military strength guarding its premises and the systematic instigation for the increase in military operations in villages around its premises, totally ignoring the well-being of these villages who have suffered for decades through its negligents in safeguarding the environment from serious ecological damage, that have included raining muds on hundreds of houses.
Indeed, ExxonMobil has been paying scant attention to the welfare of the indigenous people whose wealth it has been exploiting for decades without any benefit to them. We would like thus to take this opportunity to strongly urge EMOI to abandon this militarist strategy and to stay away from the uncivilised behaviour of the Indonesian military occupation forces in Acheh, and to redeem itself in the eyes of the Achenese and the peace loving people of the world by starting to respect human rights, here also in Acheh, not just at home in the US.
