BANDA ACEH, June 18, 2001 (TAPOL) —— A report received today, 18 June, from Kontras-Acheh, the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of violence, states that members of the police shot dead three secondary school students and seriously wounded fifteen.

After raiding the school, the police took away a number of students and two teachers to the police station in Krueng Sabee. After arriving there, they were all subjected to torture, after which the police opened fire, shooting three dead and wounding many others.

 

THE MASSACRE OCCURRED after police  raided the building of the secondary school (SMUN) in Calang, West Acheh, while students were busy being finger-printed before collecting their graduation certificates. The incident occurred on Sunday, 17 June 2001. After raiding the school, the police took away a number of students and two teachers to the police station in Krueng Sabee. After arriving there, they were all subjected to torture, after which the police opened fire, shooting three dead and wounding many others.

According to an AFP report, the victims were taken to police headquarters after a policeman had been killed outside the school in a firefight with
rebel forces.

The names of the victims are:
Azhari Iskandar (18), student, shot dead
Lukman (18), student, shot dead
Tarmizi (16), student, shot dead
