IFA Calls Achenese not to be Influenced by Jakarta's Anti American

Thousands of Jakarta protesters watch as the American flag goes up in flames during a rally in central Jakarta, September 28, 2001. Protests against the U.S. and its allies have surged in Indonesia, as the U.S. prepares for possible retaliatory strikes following attacks in New York and Washington.

Oct 14, 2001 (IFA) —— IFA, while always supporting totally the rights of every person to express their opinions and feelings freely in a democratic and peaceful way, abhors doing so with violence and unruliness and in violation of the accepted international behavior. It is thus appalled to note the attempted attacks on the US Embassy in Jakarta by unruly mobs.

e take this opportunity to make an urgent call to our people in Acheh not to be influenced by this sort of behaviors and participate in anyway in such actions, and especially not to ever try to import such actions to Acheh. Please know that such actions are incompatible with our Achenese tradition.

We, as devout Muslims, must always remain true to our religion by promoting peace and justice. The events that took place elsewhere in Indonesia such as the “sweeping” operations against American citizens in Java are exactly the same in character as the “sweeping” operations conducted daily by Indonesian soldiers against villagers in Acheh that are causing us untold sufferings that include executions, rapes, disappearances, burglaries and arsons.
