Heartless crew members of a ship passed Rizal Shahputra, 20, on Jan 1, after he had been floating seven days in the open sea, and callously waved in answer to his frantic call for help. "I have not eaten a proper meal for days," said Rizal, who weighs about 55kg. When the earthquake hit on Dec 26, Rizal, who lived near the coast in west Aceh, had been helping his father and 20 other villagers build a mosque. A neighbour ran towards them, yelling that a big wave was approaching. They dropped what they were doing and ran uphill to a double-storey office building. Rizal made it to the roof, only to be knocked off by the crashing water. He was then hit by a second wave, and found himself drifting. He drank rainwater and ate from packets of instant noodles and sachets of Milo. The supply of noodles lasted only three days. He also recited Quranic verses, ceaselessly praying that help would come. His rescuers were in awe of his indomitable spirit. Source: Malaysian Local Daily
