21 January 2001; 0800-1200 Hours Incident location: Highway Idi Cut – Idi Rayeuk, East Acheh Perpetrator: Army Bat. 145 Balau from Buket Leusong, Brimob from Bagok, Brimob from Julok, and Brimob from Idi HQs

How has it happened?: Sweeping operation along highway from Idi Cut and Idi Rayeuk (8 km) by RI joint forces. The forces have committed atrocity on civilian during their operation such as money extortion, brutality, looting, and unlawful detention of people. They randomly accused people as GAM activists. Among the victims were:

Kp. Jalan vlg, O845 Hours:

  1. Ir. A. Wahab Daud, 44, male, state employee, injured.
  2. Hassan Ishak, 28, male, state employee, house searched (door broken)
  3. Zakaria Abubakar, 37, male, trader, store ransacked and looted (goods)
  4. Husin Saleh, 54, male, trader, store ransacked and looted, and Rp 8.790.000 were taken from drawer. Total loss est. Rp 18 million
  5. Mardillah Jamil, 40, female, trader, store ransacked and looted, total loss Rp 1.7 million

Tanoh Anoë vlg, 0900 Hours:

  1. Abdul Hamid Syafie, 18, male, prayer caller (muazzin), resident of Tanoh Anoë, tortured (fainted)
  2. Dahlan Syahbuddin, 35, male, peasant, a pair of shoes was taken.
  3. Nurlela Juned, 35, female, wife of Dahlan Syahbuddin, slapped in the face and threatened that her house will be burned down if her husband does not turn himself in.

21 January 2001 2000 Hours  Incident location: Panggoi vlg, Muara Dua, North Acheh Perpetrator: Army Batt 113 Jaya Sakti
How has it happened?: Unprovoked, the army unit which was passing the road opened fire to one civilian who also passing the same road. The victim happened to live in a neighbor village adjacent to the village where the Battalion 113/JS is located. Victim: Bantasyam Muhammad, 21, m, resident of Mns. Mè Teungoh vlg, Juli, Bireuen

22 January 2001; 1000-1600 Hours

 Incident location: Paloh Punti, Muara Dua, North Acheh  Perpetrator: Joint forces Army and Police of Muara Dua and Lhokseumawe
How has it happened?: The joint forces have been dropped around Paloh Punti and sorrounded the village to continue the attack they have perpetrated days ago. At about 1000 hours the forces enpowered by around 1000 personnel started searching houses. In this raid, at least 9 houses were burned down and their owners were prevented from salvaging foodstuff, valuables, clothes, etc. They escaped only with clothes they were wearing.

 Incident location: Muara Dua, North Acheh Perpetrator: Army Muara Dua HQ
How has it happened?: In a serie of attack in same with the case # 27, one female and one male were badly injured after being tortured. This occurred when the marauding troops reached the villages of Blang Weuë.

22 January 2001; 1000 Hours

 Incident location: Lubuk Raya, Timang Gajah, Central Acheh Perpetrator: Army from Km 60 HQ

How has it happened?: The troops searched the house of Mr. Aman Heri (30). He was accused of possessing firearm. The Indonesian troops found no gun in the house. But they kept beating Mr. Heri and then took him away.

23 January 2001 Incident location: Geulangang Baroh vlg, Tanah Pasir, North Acheh Perpetrator: Army and Brimob from Tanah Pasir HQs
How has it happened?: The joint forces swept over the village in which operation they have tortured 25 villagers and burned down a house belonged to Mr. Usman

23 January 2001; 0200 Hours

 Incident location: Blang Merah, Woyla, West Acheh Perpetrator: Army and Brimob from Suak Timah HQs
How has it happened?: Post midnight raid to Blang Mirah vlg. Entered the village the Indonesian troops opened fire towards the roofs of many houses. Awaken by gun noise and shocked and thought there was a big war, many villagers tried to run for safety, in which attempt several of them have become gunshot victims. A littlel boy called by his nick name, Buyung (7), was shot dead. Another man, Tgk. Ibrahim, was also shot dead in the dark of the night. Many others have been wounded. All victims were transported to Police HQs in Meulaboh.

How has it happened?: The Indonesian joint forces raided and searched the house of Tgk. Wahab, in which Rp 1,200,000 was stolen

 Incident location: Blang Meë, Woyla, West Acheh Perpetrator: Non-organic Army from Woyla HQ
How has it happened?: In a midnight raid to the village, two villagers who happened to be still outdoor were shot. One was dead and the other was injured

 Incident location: Blang Jruën, Tanah Luas, North Acheh Perpetrator: Brimob from Blang Jruën HQ
How has it happened?: Abdullah Sulaiman (25) and Adi (24) were riding a motorbike when stopped by Brimob at a roadblock. All documents were complete, but the Brimob kept asking for some money. The two did not have any money with them so that was the reason for Brimob to torture them very badly. The victims suffered broken leg bone and ribs, as well as swollen face.

23 January 2001; 1000 Hours

 Incident location: Lam Badeuk, Lam Lhom, and Lam Pu’uk vlgs, Lhok Nga, Greater Acheh Perpetrator: Joint forces of army and police from Banda Acheh HQs
How has it happened?: Sweeping operation by the joint forces of 300 personnel (20 trucks) in the villages to search GAM personnel and HQ has resulted in great fear among villagers due to the brutal attitude of the Indonesian forces. In that action, the Indonesians assaulted people with dirty words and hard wares.

23 January 2001; 1000 Hours

 Incident location: Blang Bungong, Sigli Perpetrator: Brimob from Sigli HQ
How has it happened?: Sweeping operation by Brimob in Keulibeuët, Garôt, Peunalom II, Puloë Barôh, and Blang Bungong villages. Brimob searched many houses, stole one motorbike (Honda Grand BL 3449 CB) and tortured villagers.

 Incident location: Gampông Gadéng, Bakôngan, South Acheh Perpetrator: Army from Bakongan HQ
How has it happened?: Fifty Indonesian army personnel swept over the village for GAM activists and HQ. Found no GAM, the army burned down several houses and buildings belong to:

 Incident location: Meunasah Jeumpa Beureughang, Tanah Luas, North Acheh Perpetrator: Army from Tanah Luas HQ
How has it happened?: Indonesian army tortured a villager who gave unsatisfactory answer when asked about GAM activists. The victim, Rusli Ismail (29) was badly injured.

How has it happened?: The Indonesian security forces unlawfully arrested and detained 6 villagers (rental motorists, coffee house owners, and fishermen). The whereabouts of all of them are unknowns.

How has it happened?: Without any provocation and just because suspicion people here were GAM sympathizers, the Brimob burned down 11 houses and other buildings belong to:

24 January 2001; 1400 Hours to 2000 Hours

 Incident location: Keudèë Dua Juli, Bireuen Perpetrator: 
Unidentified persons
Brimob from Bireuen
How has it happened?:
Two personnel of organic army from battalion 113/Jaya Sakti Bireuen were attacked by unidentified persons. The two were dead and their SS-1 rifles were taken away.
The battalion leader, Major Erda, claimed that GAM was not involved in the attack, while Police Chief, Leut. Col. Wanto Sumardi accused GAM was behind the attack. GAM rejected the accusation and claimed not involved.
Immediately after the attack, police conducted a search operation, in which 166 houses belong to Keudèë Dua community were burned down. In the havoc, Brimob (not the army) shot dead two villagers: 1. Umar Sidi (50) and 2. Rosmiati Lubis (57). They also killed two cows they found grazing around. Seven people were tortured that needed hospitalization, and 7 other villagers were taken into police detention.
The atrocity was committed not only around the place where the attack occurred but also in dowtown Bireuen (3 km away) where Umar Sidi was shot dead and many others were beaten with rifle butts and bajonettes.
In Acheh, there is a bitter rivalry between non-organic Brimob and organic (local) army that had claimed many lives on both sides such as happened in Takengon, Banda Acheh, Langsa, and Lhokseumawe.

25 January 2001; 0600 Hours

 Incident location: Ranto Peureulak, East Acheh Perpetrator: Brimob Ranto HQ
How has it happened?: Two loggers from Peunarôn in a truck loaded with logs were stopped and tortured by Brimob at police HQ in Ranto for they could not pay as much money as requested by Brimob there

How has it happened?: Three fishermen who were preparing their boat for sailing were attacked and taken away by Brimob. Their whereabouts are unknown

How has it happened?: Brimob raided a coffee house where the victim was waiting the time for Friday Prayer. Brimob accused him as GAM activist and shot him in the head Hasanusi (20), dead

26 January 2001; 2200 Hours

 Incident location: Lam Manyang, Peukan Bada, Greater Acheh Perpetrator: Army Peukan Bada HQ
How has it happened?: Army personnel who were patrolling the village ordered a man to stop, but the man had failed to obey the order. Enraged Indonesian troops open fire at the man and killed him instantly. M. Nazar Ali (35), dead
Incident # 46

26 January 2001; 0530 Hours

 Incident location: Simpang Ulim, East Acheh Perpetrator: Joint forces of army and Brimob from East Acheh

How has it happened?: Sweeping to eliminate GAM activists. A girl, Hendun Ibrahim (15), a boarding school student, on her way home in that early morning, happened to run into the secretly moving Indonesian troops. She was abducted and interrogated to show them GAM HQ. Having no answer, the girl’s mouth was stuffed with rifle barrel. Although the girl begged not to be killed and screamed for help, the troop blasted her mounth and then sprayed tens of bullets in and around her genital area. Not far from the scene stood a young boy, Sofyan Yusuf (17), sneaking at what the army and Brimob have been doing. He was caught and then shot dead.

In the barbaric military operation the Indonesians also tortured scores of other civilian. One of them was Marzuki (18) was twisted until one of his hand was broken. A woman was shot in the hand

28 January 2001; 1000 Hours

 Incident location: Simpang Montasik, Greater Acheh Perpetrator: Brimob Polda Acheh
How has it happened?: Armaidi Juned (18), resident of Cot Lam Kleng Ingin Jaya, was passing on the street when he was stopped by Brimob for ID check. He gave the ID card, but the Brimob threw away the card into a ditch and he was taken away by the Brimob Armaidi Juned (18), whereabouts is unknown

28 January 2001; 1000 Hours

 Incident location: Langsa, Alue Rangan, Peureulak, and adjacent villages Perpetrator: Joint forces of army and Brimob
How has it happened?: Patrolling all streets in downtown Langsa, Alue Rangan, Peureulak, and adjacent villages, 17 truckfull of army and Brimob instructed that all stores in the areas be closed and opened fire to the air. After terrorizing people in Langsa, the Indonesian moved towards Alue Rangan and Peureulak in the west and did the same thingsthere. People in this areas who have been informed about what was happening in Langsa ware panicked and started moving away.

28 January 2001; 0900 Hours

 Incident location: Kajhu, Greater Acheh  
How has it happened?: Undercover Brimob in 3 cars came to a house asking Mr. Sulaiman, a brick merchant. Unable to find him, the Brimob forcefully took away his wife as well as a car (Escudo) and a Honda motorbike. His daughter who then came to see what was happening was also dragged into a car and taken away. The victims were released later in the evening after GAM’s Joint Committee for Security Modalities intervened.

Victims were wife and daughter of Mr. Sulaiman:

 Incident location: Different places in Greater Acheh Perpetrator: Army and Brimob Banda Acheh

How has it happened?: Unlawful arrest and detention by Indonesian security forces in a military operation:

Incident # 51

27 January 2001; 1015 Hours

 Incident location: Alue Rangan, Peureulak, East Acheh Perpetrator: Army Siliwangi Batt. 156

How has it happened?: Two REO trucks full of army personnel were speeding on a highway and one of them slipped into a ditch at a street curve. In the accident, an army officer was killed (Second Leut. Erwin). Army personnel in the other truck opened fire arbitrarily. A woman was fatally hit. Injured soldiers were transported to nearby hospital. Shortly after the accident, two ambulances passed the location from Langsa to Bireuen. The enraged army opened fire at the ambulances and critically injured two doctors and two paramedics in the ambulances. In the aftermath, the army burned down 45 houses to ash.

The Indonesian blamed GAM for this accident. GAM rejected this unbased accusation.

 Incident location: Timang Gajah, Central Acheh Perpetrator: Army and police Lampahan HQs
How has it happened?: Coming from Lampahan to conduct military operation in Timang Gajah, the Indonesian troops have assaulted people here. Four civilian were abducted in the offensive military operation. Their whereabouts are still unknown.

 Incident location: Timang Gajah, Central Acheh Perpetrator: Army and police Lampahan HQs
How has it happened?: A continuation of military operation. A Javanese peasant was taken away by Indonesian troops Tukimin (60). His whereabouts is still unknown
Incident # 54
29 January 2001 Incident location: Seuneubok Peusangan, Alue Nireh, and Seuneubok Pidie villages, East Acheh Perpetrator: Army and Brimob East Acheh HQs

How has it happened?: 15 trucks full with Indonesian joint forces conducted an offensive military operation in the villages. Some troops walked behind the trucks while singing and opening fire randomly. When they reached Seuneubok Pidie village, the Indonesians shot a junior high school student in the back.

The Indonesian troops who have been equipped with gasoline in their water cans started burning houses and stores. They burned down 23 houses and stores in Alue Nireh, 6 houses in Seuneubok Peusangan, and 13 houses and shops in Seuneubok Pidie.

The Indonesiana also robbed money from Mr. Muladi Rp 2.8 million and from M. Saleh Rp 15 million.

This military action ended with the abduction of two villagers who refused to give up money. Their whereabouts are still unknown.

 Incident location: Army and police Lhok Kuyuen HQs Perpetrator: Lhok Kuyuen, Sawang, North Acheh
How has it happened?: Entered Lhok Kuyuen village, the Indonesian forces abducted Muhammad Fadhil (23). He was accused as GAM activist while he is not. The whereabouts of Mr. Fadhil is unknown

30 January 2001; 0800 Hours

 Incident location: Gampông Putoih, Simpang Ulim, East Acheh Perpetrator: Brimob Simpang Ulim HQ
How has it happened?: Brimob were on military operation to a house which they suspected to belonged to a GAM activist. Unable to find out the suspect, they grabbed another man they found in the house, Amin Yusuf (30). The poor man was pushed to the ground and the Indonesian, with full hatred, stepped on his head and all over his body resulted in a swollen face, broken ribs and a broken leg.
